What Comes After by Steve Watkins
Sixteen years old Iris’s, veterinarian dad died. She had to leave Maine to live on a North Carolina farm with her aunt and cousin whom she barely knows. Iris, who’s a vegetarian and animal lover ,clashes with her aunt sue who mistreats the livestock, spends Iris’s small inheritance, and thinks nothing of striking Iris for the smallest offense. Things come to a head when Iris sets two young goats free to save them from slaughter and her aunt beats Iris senseless, a horrific act that lands Aunt Sue back in jail. Iris is sent to live with an offbeat foster family the Tautens and their crazy looking ferrets. Iris had to find a way to take care of animals back at the farm even it means driving out to jail and confronting her Aunt Sue.
The book it was a little confusing, but it was easy to read. I felt bad for the character she had to live an awful life with her aunt who lost her mind. People should read it because this kind story happens in a real life.
