Cheesie Mack By: Steve Colter
Cheesie Mack is a novel written by Steve Colter that takes a walk into the life of a fifth grader. This is a tale of family, and friendship in an unforgettable voice that will have kids raving. Fifth grade was the most interesting year of Donald “Cheesie” Mack’s life. He had a crazy family who gave him the nickname “Cheesie.” The nickname followed him throughout the year and even after fifth grade continuation. At the start of fifth grade he knew that since it was his last year in elementary school he had to make it memorable and memorable it was. From playing pranks on his classmates to getting into more mischief than he could handle. His life or fifth grade year that is, was far from normal. Towards the end of the novel we realize he isn’t in fifth grade but having a massive flashback that last the duration of the book.
I would recommend this book to third through fifth graders who would find this book more appealing than I did because of its clever word choice and fun adjectives. Also they could better connect with the plot and setting than kids who are no longer in the fifth grade. The best thing about the book was the author’s style of writing. It wasn’t so loaded with complicated words that you couldn’t understand it. This is an overall easy read that most middle school kids would enjoy.
