I just finished the book a few seconds ago (I have it right next to me, in fact.), and it wasn’t that he was the vanguard of “dark power”, but he kept the three he turned under control. When he died, they were set free and made more vampires. The two that killed him didn’t plead with the British government. Only one of them did- Van Helsing. He then rallied the others to form the founders of Department 19, with his future valet being a Carpenter and getting a name second-hand. On the other points, I agree with you wholeheartedly. This is far better than sparkly Twilight, and shows vampires a little more realistically. Excepting the explosions that occur when a vampire dies, the flight capabilities, and the fire that popped out of Alexandru’s heart when he died, it could happen in some unlikely future. Extremely unlikely future.
