Help Wanted by Gary Soto

March 22, 2011

This story is about Mexican American teens in central California who struggle to prove them, establish their own identities and maintain self respect in the midst of dilapidated schools, grimy neighborhoods, and hard-pressed single-parent households. These sometimes funny often poignant and occasionally provocative  stories  are laced with harsh realistic observations and grungy, everyday detail. One teen wishes desperately to turn around her family’s terrible manners. Another deals with how a girl mistook another boy for her boyfriend in a dark area at a dance and accidentally bestowed upon him unexpected first kisses. One girl mourns the loss of her mother and tries to find evidence of the woman’s spirit in every creak of the house. These interesting characters placed in unique situations and offer thought provoking endings.

This story will evoke sympathy for young people. This is great read for Latino students and would be a great read aloud for students that offer a different perspective.
